The US April trade policy uncertainty index is now a 19 standard deviation event relative to history dating back to 1960. The economic uncertainty queries index is related to the news-based approach followed by the policy uncertainty index, but replaces the frequency of newspaper articles that contain specific terms with the intensity of individual searches of similar words, shifting focus from the channel through which the message is conveyed (the media) to the receivers of the message (individuals). The economic uncertainty queries index recorded its third highest reading in the history of the series in March and has to reflect the impact of “liberation day” tariffs imposed in early April.
